Speaker: Allen Curry
Allen Curry recently retired after 30 years as a professor of Biology, Forestry and Environmental Management, and Recreational Fisheries at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in Fredericton, NB, Canada. While mostly a university research professor, his teaching dossier included courses on statistics for the environmental sciences, ecology, ecohydrology, forest engineering, and the impacts of humans on coral reefs. He has supervised 100 research associates, post-doctoral researchers, technicians, and graduate and undergraduate students. He was also the Assistant Director of the NB Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit for 25 years and a founding member then Director of the Canadian Rivers Institute (CRI) from 2004-13 where he is still a CRI Fellow. He also led the multi-million-dollar Mactaquac Aquatic Ecosystem Study that began in 2015 and persists today. Allen has over 200 peer-reviewed publications, reports, books, and book chapters in the fields of fish ecology, fisheries, freshwater/estuarine/reef ecology, ecohydrology, and various fields within hydrology from environmental flows to forest hydrology processes. His book works include co-authoring the Inland Fishes of New Brunswick and the upcoming Atlas of the Freshwater Fishes of Canada. In 2024, Allen completed a 14-month, 7,200 nautical mile, solo boat journey around eastern North America, the Weaving Waters Expedition, with his water and people stories soon to be published. Allen now lives in Hamilton, ON and remains active in research at UNB, environmental consulting and stewardship projects, various board directorships, and volunteering in the community.
